Converting a Word quiz (multiple choice) to Respondus

ENMU Roswell instructors: Please contact me if you need assistance with this process!

  1. Open the Word file of the quiz. Example: Chapter 01.doc.

  2. Save As a different file name. Example: chap01.doc

  3. Delete everything except the questions and lettered answers such as the title of the quiz and any essay questions or short answer questions.

  4. Go through the quiz inserting an asterisk (*) before the correct answer of each question. Refer to the original Word file (Chapter 01.doc in the example) for answers, if needed.

  5. Repeat step 4 until you have finished marking all the correct answers and deleting the answer information following each question. Save the file.

  6. Open Respondus. Respondus cuts down on the amount of manual formatting necessary.
NOTE: If you do not want to use Respondus, it is necessary to save the Word file as a .txt document, and then go through the file removing extra spaces between the numbered answers and the text of those answers before importing the questions into WebCT.

  7. With the Start tab active at the top of the Respondus window, click the Import Questions button.

  8. Select Microsoft Word as the type of file.

  9. Click Browse to find the file.

  10. Create a new document. Example: ch01.

  11. Click the Preview button. Any errors or problems will be reported.

  12. Click Finish. The quiz file is displayed in Respondus. You can edit or modify any of the questions as needed or desired.
