Preparing PowerPoint
Presentations for WebCT
Back to WebCT for Faculty
PowerPoint presentations
are often very large files that take a long time to download over a modem
(phone dialup) connection. By preparing PowerPoint for the Web, you reduce the
file size and the download time. Publishing the PowerPoint presentation
converts it to an .htm file so that students only need a browser (Internet
Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Opera, for example) to view the presentation. No
PowerPoint software is needed.
NOTE: The PowerPoint file name must
not contain any spaces or special characters.
- Open the
PowerPoint file. (Example: chap1.ppt).
- Click File
(on the menu bar at the top of the window), Save as Web Page.

- Click the [Publish]
button.

- Under
Publish a copy as, click Browse.

- Create a new folder.
Putting the folder on your desktop makes it easy to find. Type a name such
as pplectures. This folder will hold your .htm file and the folder of
supporting files created when you convert your PowerPoint to an .htm
document. You may choose to create the folder in My Documents.

- Click
the [Publish] button.

NOTE: Publishing the PowerPoint
presentation creates a single file with an .htm extension plus
a folder of supporting files. Both the .htm file and the
folder of files must be uploaded to WebCT. Example: email.htm (html file), email_files
(folder name).
- Zip the folder on your Desktop.
- Upload the .zip file to MyFiles
in WebCT. (Control Panel, Manage Files, Upload)
- Select the .zip file and click
Unzip (under Files) in the Actions panel on the
right side of the screen.
- Link your PowerPoint as a
single page in a Content Module or on an Organizer page to the .htm file. Test
it to be sure it works!

- Click
the [Save] button.
